“The Power of Words: How to Close the 30-Million Word-Gap”
A highly engaging workshop that focuses on research-based strategies to reduce the 30-million-word gap between children of upper-income families and those from lower-income families. This session focuses on interactive activities, such as R.E.A.D. and dialogic reading. A combination of self-affirming exercises, case studies, and a “vocabulary scaling” exercise is introduced to enhance vocabulary acquisition and verbal fluency. “Parent’s Guide to Cultivating a Love for Reading: Inspiring the Uninspired, Reluctant Reader”
Many parents and educators have asked, “How do I cultivate a love of reading in a reluctant reader?” This workshop builds upon the concepts explored in “The Power of Words”. It provides an in-depth examination of the correlation between reading and developing an extensive vocabulary, which is shown to significantly influence intellectual ability and academic success in school and life. This session introduces the four keys to cultivating a love for reading, along with case studies, videos, and several interactive activities. Lastly, this workshop includes a parent-child accountability contract to ensure that a solid commitment to cultivating a love for reading is implemented and sustained.
“Parent’s Guide to Preventing Summer Slide”
Preventing “Summer Slide” is more critical than ever before. It is estimated that the loss of classroom time due to the pandemic, combined with the traditional "summer slide," will leave many students 2–2.5 months behind academically. This hands-on workshop focuses on time management strategies, goal-setting, and motivational techniques. These tools and interactive math and reading activities will help students stay academically engaged throughout the summer and be well-prepared for the upcoming school year. *This session is offered during the second half of the school year and throughout the summer.
